Fort Snelling
Established in 1819, this fort was built to protect the fur trade. Later, it became a military training center from the Civil War to World War II. Its inhabitants included Dred Scott, the famous slave who eventually won his freedom. The fort's site, at the confluence of the Mississippi and Minnesota Rivers, is historically significant to Dakota Indians.
