Memories of the Battle of New Ulm

New Ulm, Minnesota, bore the brunt of the Sioux Uprising in 1862 during two battles, which decided the fate of what became known as the Dakota Conflict. Drawn from Dr. Fritsche's county history, this work provides a documentary history of the conflict and elucidates New Ulmer citizen's views of the conflict. Although they clearly condemned the mistreatment of the Sioux, which led to the uprising, they, at the same time, condemned the death and destruction that followed. This in itself provides inslight into the dilemma and tragedy of the situation.

The book is arranged in six parts: Biographical information about the Fritsche family, The Uprising (causes leading to the outbreak, complaints against Indian agents), Personal Accounts (vengeance on the traders, Theresa Henle's Account), Punishment of the Sioux (the execution), Remembrance and Review (monuments), and an appendix which discusses Indian history and treaties, pioneer settlement and the City of New Ulm. A new editor's conclusion and a full name index add to the value of this work.
