State Correctional Institution (Prison) Record Research (usually ships in 30 business days)

The State Archives of the Minnesota Historical Society Library preserves historical state and local government records, including records from the state correctional institutions. Records vary from facility to facility, but may include inmate case files, admission and discharge registers, commitment papers, parole records, inmate photographs and trial transcripts.

Restrictions for access

  • Individuals have the right review their own records, so long as the privacy interests of third parties, (e.g. parole officer interviews with friends and relatives, adoption information or information on crime victims), are not affected.
  • Generally, inmate case files are restricted for 72 years from admission date, or if the inmate is deceased 30 years from admission date and 10 years after the death date. Again, information on third parties contained within the record may not accessible.

Records are held for the following state correctional institutions::

  • Sauk Centre Home School for Girls (opened 1903; records restricted for 100 years)
  • St. Cloud State Prison (opened 1887)
  • Shakopee State Reformatory for Women (opened 1919
  • Stillwater State Prison (opened 1854)
  • Red Wing State Training School for Boys (opened 1868)
  • Red Wing State Training School for Girls (opened 1898; in 1911 girls at the School were transferred to the Sauk Centre Home School for Girls)

Information about what types of records the Society holds for each institution listed above is available on the prison records web page.

Research Prices

  • Library staff will search for one name in one institutional record group. Depending upon the age of the record, an application for permission to access a record may be required. Library staff will determine whether or not an application form is required when the research request is made.

Researchers who visit the Library may conduct research within this record group with any necessary assistance from Library staff, request records, flag documents within a record and request individual copies of these documents at a cost of .25 cents per page. This option is not available to off-site researchers.
