Built by the U.S. Lighthouse Service, Split Rock Light Station has stood sentinel over the waters of Lake Superior's North Shore for 100 years. Located high atop a sheer 130 foot cliff, the lighthouse was first lit on July 31, 1910. Restored to its early-20th century splendor, it is one of America's best-preserved lighthouses and is one of the most visited and photographed lighthouses in the country.
Part One is a virtual tour that escorts you through the Visitor Center, keeper's house, oil storage building, fog signal building, and up the lighthouse tower into the lantern room where the original French bivalve lens is still operable. From this vantage point, 168 feet above the waters of Lake Superior, you can see the south shore across the sparkling waters and peek over the sheer cliff to the rocky shoreline below.
Part Two presents the beauty of Split Rock Lighthouse as seen through the lens of photographer Dennis O'Hara. Over the past 25 years, Dennis has photographed the lighthouse in every season and has compiled this unique collection of images that will show you the true magnificence of the lighthouse set to the captivating piano orchestral music of Mary Beth Carlson.
