Covering the years 1834-1862, when Henry Sibley, Minnesota's first governor, live at St. Peters (later called Mendota).

Henry Hastings Sibley: Minnesota's first governor, a general, a legislator, a public servant, a pivotal figure in Minnesota's beginnings. In 1834 as a young man he moved to the region from Michigan and began working, as a fur trader at St. Peters, now Mendota, across the river from Fort Snelling. There he came to know the Dakota and Ojibwe Indians, French-Canadian and American traders, military men, missionaries, and early immigrants who were the region's first residents, earning their respect. This is the story of those early years, when Sibley came to know Minnesota and Minnesota came to know Sibley.
