Minnesotans at the Top of the World

by David Christopher Arnold

In the summer of 1951, thousands of civilian contract workers built an airbase 700 miles inside the Arctic Circle. The Cold War---era installation was top secret: many of these workers did not know their destination--Thule, Greenland--until they arrived by ship or plane in July. An intense four months later, they had completed work on an airbase that remains in use today.

Mr. Budd’s Historical Expeditions

by Randal O’Toole

Spectacular scenery with a generous serving of history: in 1925 and 1926, the Great Northern Railway sponsored two trips to celebrate storied sites between Chicago and the Oregon coast. The brainchild of railway president Ralph Budd, the expeditions involved dedications of historic monuments, numerous lectures on the Northwest, and celebrations at key stops including Glacier National Park and Astoria, Oregon.

The Modern Dancer’s Skin: Costumes of Gertrude Lippincott

by Stephanie Olson

Prominent choreographer, performer, and teacher Gertrude Lippincott brought dramatic fashion to center stage throughout the Midwest. Her belief in the vital relationship between costume and dance inspired bold designs, thoughtfully created costuming, and the melding of performance and dress, as evidenced by stunning samples in Minnesota Historical Society collections.
