Dutch Elm in St. Paul and Minneapolis: A Tale of Two Cities

by David Soll

In the late 1970s and early 1980s, Dutch elm disease struck Minneapolis and St. Paul with force. Though both cities recognized the severity of the epidemic and mounted serious efforts to combat the beetle, the effects of Dutch elm were far from uniform. Lessons can be learned from the differing responses of each city in order to minimize future tree contagions.

“A Gal Named Lou”

Photos, playbills, and autograph books belonging to vaudeville and burlesque dancer Lou Murray, now in the collections of the Minnesota Historical Society, do not hint at her tragic end.

by Johannes Allert

A donated World War I-era footlocker arrived at the Anoka County Historical Society in 2005. It belonged to the namesake of the local American Legion post, Edward Cutter. Cutter’s life and significance is recreated here through archival research.
