Before you order

Many Minnesota marriage records can be found on the Minnesota Official Marriage System (MOMS)--an online index created and maintained by Minnesota Counties. Please check on MOMS before you order and include the marriage certificate number that you find there.

Please note that MNHS has marriage records for certain counties in select years. Below is a county list of marriage records available; before you order, please make sure that the marriage took place in a location and date range that is listed. For more information, please view our Marriage Records Research Guide.

For this research service, Library Staff will search for one couple in one county's marriage records.

If the marriage date is unknown, library staff will search up to a two year date range in one county's marriage records.

About this Research Service
Marriage records are made and often kept by the Minnesota county where the license was issued. MNHS holds the marriage records of 21 of Minnesota's counties. The list of counties and available dates is listed in the order form.

Because the counties' records are separate, requests must include the county where the record would have been filed.

Note: A marriage license/certificate was usually from the bride's county of residence--even if that is not where the marriage took place--and could have been acquired some time before the marriage ceremony.

MNHS holds non-certified marriage records. If you need an official copy please check with the vital records office from the county where the marriage certificate was issued. Contact information for all Minnesota county offices can be found here. The Minnesota Official Marriage System (https://moms.mn.gov/) has an index that can be used to search for many Minnesota marriage records in order to find the county of issuance.
