Each year the Minnesota Historical Society (MNHS) will collaborate with a different artist to develop a limited-edition collaborative product line. The series is called Our Home: Native Minnesota, and it is connected with the exhibit at the Minnesota History Center.

This year, MNHS is featuring Prairie Island and former artist in residence Cole Redhorse Taylor.

Cole Redhorse Taylor is a multidisciplinary visual artist. He is Mdewakanton Dakota and enrolled with the Prairie Island Indian Community in southeastern Minnesota. In 2017, he received his BFA majoring in Fine Arts Studio with an emphasis in drawing and painting from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. In 2025, he received his MFA in Studio Arts from the Institute of American Indian Art in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Cole works in multiple different mediums, both in customary Dakota art forms such as beadwork, quillwork, and textile work; he also works in drawing, painting, collage work, and illustration. His work is informed by his people’s proximity to their homelands of Minnesota. Their material culture reflects their relationships to the land, waterways, and cosmos above. By implementing these epistemologies in his practice, he is able to navigate from a traditional Dakota worldview, but as an artist in the contemporary world.

In 2018, Cole was awarded the Minnesota Historical Society’s Native American Artist Residency. He worked on helping revitalize “puckertoe” moccasins in Dakota communities again. By spending time with his ancestors’ objects again, this residency changed the trajectory of his career, which he is still on today. In 2023, he was selected to design a helmet for the Minnesota Wild hockey team’s goalie Marc-Andre Fleury for their Native American Heritage night. The helmet honored both the Indigenous history of Minnesota and Marc-Andre Fleury’s wife and children, who are also Indigenous. The helmet was donated to a silent auction for a Native American-led charity. The winning bid was the Minnesota Historical Society.
