Handmade Dolls by Artist, Joyce LaPorte.
Joyce LaPorte, Giiwedanangikwe (North Star woman), is an Ojibwe elder from the Fond du Lac reservation in northern Minnesota. Joyce’s dolls are in the Smithsonian Institute for Arts, the History Center in St. Paul, MN and on display at Madeline Island, in northern Wisconsin. She has sold dolls at the National Indian Council on Aging in Tulsa, Oklahoma, at the art school in Grand Marais, MN and yearly at the Minnesota Women’s Art Festival in Minneapolis, MN where she sits with her dolls and grandchildren, a quiet calm presence in the midst of Christmas craft frenzy. Joyce received a 2011 McKnight Individual Artist grant for a solo exhibition at the Fond du lac Tribal and Community College.
