Description
Communities near the Boundary Waters in northern Minnesota—at the “end of the road”—offer diverse recipes and foodways. Columnist Crystal Schlueter has compiled a hearty selection that will delight the palate.
A microcosm of the rich traditions of a storied region, End of the Road Cookbook captures little-known recipes that will translate easily to tables in every locale. Potlucks across Minnesota’s northland feature a dazzling array of tantalizing dishes. Ojibwe, Slovenian, Italian, German, Irish, Croatian, Polish, Finnish, and Scandinavian flavors sit side by side, inviting guests to indulge in their favorites and swap compliments with their neighbors.
Iron Range native Crystal Schlueter collects and perfects traditional preparations, often with her own contemporary twist. While highlighting the “Five Ps” of regional cooking—Cornish pasties, Croatian pigs in a blanket, Italian porketta, Slovenian potica, and Finnish pulla—Schlueter also explores the variety of salads (loosely defined) that often appear at community gatherings, the hearty soups that satisfy, the fish and venison and wild rice dishes that are as local as it gets.
End of the Road Cookbook includes menus for Boundary Waters adventuring, seasonal meals for Sunday suppers, and intriguingly named dishes like Frog-Eye (Pasta) Salad, Green Beans in Whoa Sauce, Root Beer Fish Fry, and Rumbledethumps. Celebrating deep cultural roots and rich ethnic traditions, Schlueter shows that fine dining awaits at the “end of the road.”

Advance Praise
““If you have ever made the pilgrimage to the Iron Range for porketta, pasties, Zup’s hot mustard, or a proper cabbage roll, Crystal Schlueter’s End of the Road Cookbook is just what you have been waiting for. This is Range food: wild rice, potica, pulla, palatschinken (and various derivatives of pancakes), pasties, and hand pies that make Minnesota’s northland the rich and delicious food culture we know today.” —Stephanie Hansen, author of True North Cabin Cookbook: Recipes and Stories from a North Woods Table and True North Cabin Cookbook, Volume Two: Seasonal Recipes from a Cozy Kitchen
“End of the Road Cookbook is a revelation. Stunningly beautiful, the book evokes the spirit of the Iron Range, a remote corner of our country, through its food. Chock-full of stories, memories, and sure-fire recipes, this is a glorious celebration of food, family, and place.” —Beth Dooley, author of The Northern Heartland Kitchen and Minnesota’s Bounty: The Farmers Market Cookbook
“When Crystal won a recipe contest I was judging, I applauded her ingenious combination of flavors and textures. Now, in End of the Road Cookbook she shares that creative flair with home cooks. It takes talent to bring together the right ingredients to create a dish. Crystal definitely has this talent!” —John Moeller, author of Dining at the White House: From the President's Table to Yours
