Was turn-of-the-century Minneapolis acrobat and vaudevillian Fred J. Lowe the inspiration for the “Happy Hooligan,” one of the most popular and influential comic strip characters in American history? A recent MNHS acquisition of artifacts related to Lowe’s career raises the possibility.

To Honor the Soldier Dead: The Todd County World War I Monument

The Todd County monument is most likely the first erected by a Minnesota county to honor World War I casualties. In the two short years between when the memorial was conceived (1918) and dedicated (1920), the political context of World War I’s meaning had already shifted.
