The Rabbit Lake Cases: Minnesota Grapples with Questions of Shoreland, Lake, and Mineral Ownership
Paul Kilgore
In this “Land of 10,000 Lakes,” individuals and organizations are capable of owning land to the exclusion of others, but Minnesota’s lakes are understood to be, in varying degrees, for the enjoyment of all. Why are lakes not bought, owned, and sold as land is? If lakes are to be treated differently, what about the land beneath the water: Who owns that? Writer and attorney Paul Kilgore investigates these questions and more in the cases of Rabbit Lake, a lake little more than two square miles in size, which epitomize Minnesota’s struggle to reconcile public and private rights to the state’s water bodies and minerals.
Miss Carrie H. Lippincott: The Woman Behind the Seed Empire and the Fight for Her Name
Jennifer Huebscher
Curator Jennifer Huebscher narrates the story of Carrie Lippincott, the self-proclaimed Pioneer Seedswoman of America, whose legacy as an entrepreneur has persisted largely through the preservation of her seed catalogs and the Miss C. H. Lippincott seed company scrapbook donated to MNHS. Lippincott’s determination and aptitude for management and marketing ensured the longevity of her company, placing her solidly in the ranks of a generation of businesswomen establishing themselves ahead of winning the right to vote.
