This service is an index search only. However, if the employee is found in the personnel index for either railway, staff will report whether the Minnesota Historical Society has a more complete personnel record for that employee and how that record may be requested.

For this research service staff will search for one person in the personnel index to the Great Northern Railway (circa 1890s) or the Northern Pacific Railway (circa 1909-1960s).

Processing fee
The price of this service includes a non-refundable processing fee of $5. This is not an additional charge; however, if your order is cancelled for any reason, the Minnesota Historical Society will retain that amount.

Turnaround
Research is usually completed and sent within three to four weeks. In some circumstances it may take up to twelve weeks to complete work.

About this research service:
MNHS holds indexes to employee records from the Great Northern Railway and the Northern Pacific Railway. 

Employee index records give basic information such as:

  • Employee name
  • Employee number
  • Job title
  • Location (city or division) - Great Northern only

If the person is found in the personnel index for either railway, staff will report whether the Minnesota Historical Society has a more complete personnel record for that employee and how that record may be requested. 

Note: many Northern Pacific Railway employee records are available through Ancestry.com
